The honest answer up front: there's no one number. A tree service estimate depends on the size of the tree, how close it is to the house and power lines, how easy the property is to get equipment into, what kind of debris is left behind, and whether the work is routine or an emergency.
That said, after years of working across Vista, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Escondido and the rest of North San Diego County, we've got a pretty good sense of what jobs typically run. Here's a straight-talk overview of the five main service categories, with realistic North County price ranges.
Tree removal
The biggest variable. A small backyard tree under 25 feet that a crew can drop and chip in a couple of hours is at the low end. A 90-foot eucalyptus over a roof, with crane work and traffic control, is at the high end of the spectrum.
- Small trees (under 25 ft): typically $300-$700
- Medium trees (25-50 ft): typically $600-$1,500
- Large trees (50-80 ft): typically $1,200-$3,000
- Very large or hazardous (80+ ft, eucalyptus, near structures): $2,500-$6,000+, sometimes more if a crane is needed
Stump removal is usually quoted separately. For the deeper breakdown including North County tree removal cost factors and why eucalyptus removal costs more, see those guides. Service page: tree removal.
Tree trimming
Trimming is canopy management — clearance, shape, view work, light penetration. Lower-stakes than pruning, faster work, and the price reflects it.
- Small yard tree, basic clearance: typically $200-$400
- Medium tree, moderate canopy work: typically $350-$800
- Large tree, bucket truck access required: typically $700-$1,500
- Multiple trees on one visit: usually a per-tree price drop because mobilization is shared
For a granular breakdown see tree trimming cost in North County. Service page: tree trimming.
Tree pruning
Pruning is the surgical version — structural cuts, deadwooding, crown cleaning, restoration of trees that were previously hacked up. Slower, more skilled work, priced accordingly.
- Young tree structural pruning: typically $250-$600
- Mature crown cleaning: typically $500-$1,500
- Crown reduction / weight reduction (eucalyptus storm-prep): typically $600-$2,000
- Restoration pruning on a butchered tree: typically $500-$1,500 spread over 2-3 visits

Stump grinding
Most tree removal quotes don't include the stump unless you ask. Grinding is usually priced by stump diameter or by inch.
- Small stump (under 12 inches): typically $100-$250
- Medium stump (12-24 inches): typically $200-$450
- Large stump (24-36 inches): typically $400-$800
- Very large or hard-to-access: $700-$1,500+
- Bundled with same-day removal: often $50-$150 cheaper than a separate visit
Palm "stumps" don't grind the same way — palm fiber is stringy and chews up grinder teeth. Expect a slight surcharge. See stump grinding cost in North County for full ranges. Service page: stump grinding.
Emergency tree service
Storm response, tree on a house, tree blocking the road — this is its own pricing category because it's after-hours, requires fast mobilization, and the work is usually more dangerous than scheduled removal.
- Branch through a window or non-structural strike: typically $400-$1,200
- Mid-size tree on a roof: typically $1,500-$4,000
- Large tree on the structure, crane needed: $3,000-$8,000+
- Tree blocking driveway or street, no structure damage: typically $500-$1,500
Most homeowner's policies cover removal of a tree that hit a covered structure (subject to deductibles and per-tree caps). For the full playbook, see our guide on what to do when a tree falls on your house, plus emergency tree service in North County. Service page: emergency tree service.
What actually drives the price
Beyond size, there are five things that move the number on a quote:
- Access: Can the truck and chipper get to the tree, or is everything getting hand-carried 200 feet through a side gate?
- Proximity to structures and power lines: Anything within drop-zone of a house, fence, pool, or SDG&E line takes longer and costs more because every limb gets rigged down with ropes.
- Species: Eucalyptus, large pines, and old oaks are more work than a yard ficus of the same height.
- Debris: Hauling vs. chipping vs. leaving wood on-site for the homeowner. Chipping is fastest; hauling raw rounds takes more truck time.
- Permit and HOA factors: Coastal HOAs (Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe) often require approvals before removal. That's owner-side paperwork, but it does affect timing.
How North San Diego County compares to the rest of California
If you've called around or moved here from elsewhere in California, here's the rough picture:
- San Diego County (including North County): Generally on par with the California average. Mild climate means we work year-round, which keeps competition healthy.
- Los Angeles / Orange County: Often 10-20% higher on comparable jobs. Higher labor costs, tighter access on many lots, and heavy traffic-control requirements push the bottom line up.
- San Francisco Bay Area: The most expensive market in the state — frequently 25-40% above San Diego pricing on equivalent work, driven by labor costs and steep, hard-access lots.
- Inland Empire / Central Valley: Sometimes a bit cheaper than San Diego on routine work, but emergency response and crane work are comparable.
